Domestic Worker Rights Enforcement Strategies: Lessons from New York
Languages: English & Spanish
Room: 351
In the last decade, domestic workers have made huge gains winning state and municipal bill of rights campaigns. But along with winning new rights and laws, our movement has innovated ways to ensure those new rights and laws are enforced. In this workshop we will talk about different strategies for domestic workers to enforce their labor rights. The workshop will highlight: the Groundbreakers program, a domestic worker led outreach and enforcement effort in NYC that recruits over 100 domestic workers to legal clinics every year; co-enforcement programs and partnerships with state departments of labor and other agencies; data collection to make the case for better policies and stronger enforcement mechanisms; and how to win state and local funding to support enforcement work.
